Win tickets to see The Wailers at the Keswick

Posted by Lindsey M.

For over 40 years, and through many configurations, The Wailers' pioneering mix of ska, reggae, and rock steady styles has outlasted every trend and next big thing, while serving as an inspiration to artists like Eric Clapton, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, and many more.

The Wailers spawned reggae legends Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, and the current incarnation - anchored by longtime bassist Family Man - carries on their grand tradition by playing material from all phases of their storied career.

Their show at Glenside's Keswick Theater on April 8 will feature selections from The Hippy Boys, their stint with Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters, and, of course, Bob Marley's classic catalog.

Enter for your chance to win one of five pairs of tickets to the Keswick show here.

And you can learn more about the essential music of The Wailers here.

Now at the Kimmel Center: Groovaloo

Posted by Deidre Wengen

I can't dance.

I tend to look like Elaine from Seinfeld at her company office party. It's not a pretty sight. I do this weird shoulder thing.

So, needless to say, I'm envious of people who can dance. And the members of hip-hop group The Groovaloos can definitely dance. In fact, they were the dance troupe that took home top honors on Fox's hit television show "So You Think You Can Dance."

This week, through March 14th, you can see them perform live at the Kimmel Center in Phialdelphia. Tickets range from $25-$59.50 and can be purchased by visiting the Kimmel Center Web site.

These people are pretty incredible. Ignore the silly name and watch them do crazy acrobatic dance moves that defy all logic. I'd pay to see it.

Catch Spring Fever with Magic Hat @ Bryn Mawr Beverage, March 19

Posted by Dave McGurgan

Stop into Bryn Mawr Beverage on March 19, 2010 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. to sample selections from Magic Hat Brewery's Spring Fever collection.

Their all-new Spring selection, Vinyl, is a really tasty amber lager worthy of your attention. The folks from Magic Hat will also be pouring their latest Odd Notion, which is an unfiltered American Wheat Pale Ale.

If you ask nicely, they'll probably give you some Magic Hat chotchkies and flair. Just please don't be THAT person who asks for endless refills on the beer samples; do the right thing and pony up for your own case.

Eating Out for Reading in Queens Village tonight

Posted by Deidre Wengen

I seriously love when restaurants participate in charity events. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Restaurants make money, charities make money and you get a delicious meal.

So if you are looking to eat out tonight (Tuesday, March 9) and enjoy some of the wonderful weather in Philadelphia, make sure to head down to Queens Village. A few participating restaurants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to Reach Out and Read, an organization that gives children a new book when they visit the doctor.

The event is being sponsored by South Philadelphia Pediatrics and some of the restaurants involved include La Fourno, Saute, Mustard Greens and Bistrot La Minette. There are plenty of choices for discerning diners.

More information can be found right here and make sure to call ahead to the restaurants to make reservations.

Mayer Hawthorne at the Church tonight

Posted by Deidre Wengen

Looks are deceiving when it comes to Mayer Hawthorne-- an incredibly buzz-worthy musician and singer (real name is Andrew Cohen) from Ann Arbor, Michigan. With the thick-rimmed glasses and snappy style, you wouldn't visualize him crooning out soul ballads and retro funk. But that is exactly what this dude does.

Hawthorne released his debut album called "A Strange Arrangement" back in September and he's already been garnering plenty of praise from critics and support from fans.

This pop-soul songwriter will be performing tonight in Philadelphia at the First Unitarian Church. The show starts at 8:00 and support will be provided by Nikki Jean. Tickets are $15 and you can pick them up over on TicketFly.com.

And if you can't check out Cohen tonight, then make sure to makr your calendars because he will be back in town for The Roots Picnic on June 5th.

CLASSIC TALE: Airman's Passion For The Chevelle Malibu Took Off In 1965

Posted by VERN PARKER

Airman Second Class Robert Holland was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in central California when he bought a new car in April 1965. Holland purchased his first blue "300 Series" Chevrolet Chevelle four-door sedan with a 327-cubic-inch V-8 engine and a four-speed transmission. Within a year the young man was discharged and drove his car home to Elgin, Ill.

Today in 2010, Holland still owns that 1965 Chevrolet. He has had so much good luck with it that in the last 45 years he has owned 19 Chevelle and Malibu cars.

Jenny Owen Youngs playing Johnny Brenda's this Tuesday

Posted by Deidre Wengen

If you have yet to hear about acoustic Brooklyn-based songstress Jenny Owen Youngs, then it is high time you listen up.

I saw this girl last year as part of the Hotel Cafe Tour. She played with the likes of Rachel Yamagata, Meiko and Thao Nguyen, and definitely stood out as someone original and totally cool.

Owen Youngs' performance is a nice combination of sweet songs mixed with a sailor sensibility. She's funny and irreverent when talking with an audience and completely engaging when singing and strumming her guitar.

Her latest full-length "Transmitter Failure" was released around this time last year and the new "Last Person EP" is currently available for download and will release later this month.

Owen Youngs will be performing tomorrow night (Tuesday, March 9) at Johnny Brendas (show begins at 9:00 pm). Tickets are $10 and you can grab them here.

Check out the video above to see what all the fuss is about. She's really awesome.

Man survives after steering wheel pops off

Posted by Chris Illuminati

It's like something out of a Stooges short. Here hold this imbecile.

State troopers said a man is lucky to have only minor injuries when he crashed his car into a barn after his steering wheel popped off while driving. Trooper Keith Leary said the 59-year-old man was driving his 1978 Buick on Thursday afternoon on State Route 530 when his steering wheel came off, the car left the road, went down an embankment, up the other side, and crashed into a barn.

I'm sure everyone at Toyota exhaled a sigh of relief after reading the make of the car.

My car makes noises but not like this

The sounds in this video are ACTUAL sounds from the Jeep. Everyone began rehearsing their parts 2 weeks before we shot the video. It took us 7 hours of filming to get a solid take.
