Shifting gears back to the muscle car era

Posted by GEORGE MATTAR

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP

As a teen in the late 1960s, Rob Leipziger sat at the corner of Woodbourne and New Falls roads in Middletown watching gas station employees road-test Chevrolet Camaro Z/28s, Chevelles and Corvettes.

Many times, "They really got on it, shifting those four-speed transmissions, laying down rubber for as far as I could see down Woodbourne Road," the 54-year-old said recently. "It was my dream to own cars like that."

Now he does.

The owner of Rob's Automotive and Collision Center, one of the largest automotive repair businesses in Bucks County with 160 employees, has amassed a small collection of 1960s muscle cars and has opened a museum to house them.

He said he loves Chevrolet products, so it's fitting that his collection of 1969 Camaros and other high-performance cars now sits inside the former Weed Chevrolet dealership on Route 413 near Ford Road in Bristol Township, about a half mile from his collision center. Admission is free.

He recently opened the vintage car museum and sales location, where he'll also service vehicles, at the former Weed site, which is about 7 acres. Leipziger said he expects his new venture to employ 30 people.

CLASSIC TALE: Grandson Buys 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS From Grandmother

Posted by Vern Parker

Chris Coad remembers his excitement as an 8-year-old boy when he accompanied his grandmother to the Chevrolet dealership.

He was riding in his grandmother's pink 1957 Ford Thunderbird to use as a trade-in for a new 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS. She wanted a car that would last, so she opted for heavy-duty components. Those selections led her to an Impala SS hardtop coupe with a base price of $3,003. It was one of 66,510 such models manufactured that model year.

ASK THE AUTO DOCTOR: 2005 Prius Hybrid Battery Should Be Tested For Voltage

Posted by Junior Damato

Dear Doctor: I have a 2005 Toyota Prius that got stuck in traffic on a slight incline. It seems that I can only creep and crawl forward on the battery, and the line denoting battery capacity is getting less and less. I'm unable to move the car forward fast enough to charge the battery. Once the battery is depleted can the Prius move forward on the gasoline engine alone? Richard

Dear Richard:
In the case describe your Prius should operate under gasoline power. There have been many updates in the computer programming. I recommend you go back to the Toyota dealer. Another concern is the battery will be going on six years old and should be tested for its ability to store the reserve voltage needed.

CLASSIC TALE: 1967 Mini Cooper S Mark II Is Rare Model In The U.S.

Posted by Vern Parker

Ray Samuels explains that only a few hundred Mini Cooper S Mark II cars like his were manufactured in the 1967 model year. The reason for the limited production, he says, was because most of the British-built cars were destined for the United States; however, the U.S. government altered the safety rules for the importation of the cars, which made any further production impractical.

Samuels says evidence shows that his Mini's original owner "used it up pretty good." In 1975, after 39,000 miles the crankshaft snapped and the disabled car was parked with the intention that the engine could be rebuilt. By 1989, reality set in and the owner realized that he was never going to return the car to good health. He advertised the 1967 Mini Cooper S Mark II for sale, which is where it captured the attention of Samuels.

"I had heard that General Motors would produce a new model called the `Monte Carlo'," Miller recalls.

CLASSIC TALE: Airman's Passion For The Chevelle Malibu Took Off In 1965

Posted by VERN PARKER

Airman Second Class Robert Holland was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in central California when he bought a new car in April 1965. Holland purchased his first blue "300 Series" Chevrolet Chevelle four-door sedan with a 327-cubic-inch V-8 engine and a four-speed transmission. Within a year the young man was discharged and drove his car home to Elgin, Ill.

Today in 2010, Holland still owns that 1965 Chevrolet. He has had so much good luck with it that in the last 45 years he has owned 19 Chevelle and Malibu cars.
