Orange Country Choppers to run restaurant in Old City. Wait, what?

Posted by Deidre Wengen

Okay, so I'm officially confused.

Apparently the hotel developer for the Cambria Sweets, a space set to open on 4th and Race, has plans to bring the Orange County Chopper crew to Philadelphia.

According to this article from Brownstoner.com there are plans for a restaurant and entertainment space in the hotel that will supposedly be run by the OCC crew.

The venture is similar to a Roadhouse restaurant and bar opened in upstate New York.

This all seems a bit out-of-place to me. Old City is host to some of the classiest restaurants, hotels and entertainment bars in the city. So to put a joint like this just a few blocks from the Liberty Bell is slightly mind-boggling.

There's no word yet on when we can expect to see this place open.

Amada introduces Heirloom Tomato Tasting Menu in August

Posted by Deidre Wengen

From Wednesday, August 18 until Wednesday, August 25, Chef Jose Garces’ acclaimed Old City Spanish tapas bar and restaurant, Amada, will offer a special $55 Heirloom Tomato Chef’s Tasting Menu in honor of Buñel, Spain’s annual La Tomatina Festival. The world’s largest food fight festival, held on the last Wednesday in August since 1944, features residents and tourists of the town, throwing more than 150,000 tomatoes at each other in honor of Buñel’s patron saints, San Luis Bertràn and Mare de Dèu dels Desemparats.

August is prime season for our region’s incomparable heirloom tomatoes, and we’re thrilled to enjoy them in a way that also pays tribute to the roots of our food here at Amada,” says Chef de Cuisine Macgregor Mann who created the Heirloom menu. “This special tasting menu is a fun way to highlight the summer’s freshest flavors and also celebrate one of Spain’s quirkiest seasonal celebrations.

The four-course menu will include: Tomate Coca, a crispy flat bread with tomato sofriget sauce and Manchego cheese, topped with herb-marinated heirloom tomatoes (see photo above); Salmorejo Soup, chilled heirloom tomato soup garnished with farm-fresh egg and Serrano ham salad; and Ensalada de Tomate con Chorizo, heirloom tomato salad with a warm Chorizo Bilbao and sherry vinaigrette, served with fresh goat cheese and Jamon Iberico.

Posted by Deidre Wengen

When Philadelphia Magazine rolls out their Best of Philly list, locals and tourists alike definitely pay attention.

The mag is currently rolling out their new 2010 list on facebook and on twitter.

And if you've been dying to know which restaurant was named as the best new eatery in the city, then wait no longer-- Mike Stollenwerk fish at 1708 Lombard Street takes the title.

Stollenwerk won over diners with his Queen's Village BYOB Little Fish, which was closed down due to building-repair issues. Now his take on seafood shines at the recently opened Rittenhouse restaurant.

So if you are in the city and feel like...well...fish, make sure to stop by this hot spot and sample some of their delicious offerings.

Lobster and goat burgers at PYT

Posted by Deidre Wengen

Restaurateurs and bar owners in Philadelphia have recently engaged in some friendly burger wars. And while the jury is still out on who takes the title of best burger in the city, PYT owner Tommy Up is definitely keeping diners on their toes.

The Northern Liberties bar creates a special burger every week and definitely gets creative with the process. That means that we can expect to find some tasty and unique combinations between the buns.

Last week, the special was a Truffled Lobster Burger. The meat patti was packed on top with truffled lobster meat and a creamy aioli sauce. The special was so popular that it is now a regular menu item and can be yours for a mere $14! The restaurant is now stocked and supplied with lobster and diners can expect them to begin serving a version of the classic New England lobster roll sometime in the near future.

And the special burger this week looks like a tasty triumph. It is a Jerk Goat Burger (pictured) that is served with mango chutney and a side of plantain chips. Mmmmm....

It's Belgian Independence Day! Celebrate in Philly.

Posted by Deidre Wengen

I don't need an excuse to stuff my face with frittes and drink some Chimay, but I have three words incase you need a little bit of motivation-- Belgian Independence Day.

Yes, it's definitely time to celebrate the freedom of the country that is responsible for tasty mussels, delicious beer and the best cut-and-fried potatoes on this earth.

The city of Philadelphia has plenty of Belgian bars that are tapping special beer selections and hosting promotions to celebrate this important occasion.

Monks Cafe on 16th Street and sister bar The Belgian Cafe are tapping all kinds of lip-licking libations. You can grab Tripel Perfection and Zurr at Monks or La Chouffe, Ommegang, Duvel and St. Bernardus at the Belgian Cafe.

Eulogy in Old City will be giving out some t-shirts and they'll be serving up specials on Duvel and Ommegang beers.

And if you're in the Rittenhouse area, head over to Devil’s Den and grab dollar-off specials on all their Belgian draft beers.

Cheers to Belgian independence!
