Get baked, without the milk or eggs

Foodies, I have some news that's going to thrill you (at least if the idea of a vegan lifestyle doesn't make you want to run for the closest dairy).
A new vegan bakery is setting up shop up on South Street. Sweet Freedom is opening its doors at the end of next week, and by doing so will bring a flood of baked goods made without dairy, eggs, soy or gluten.
That's a lot to take in (or out, as the case may be), so we'll start from the top. The idea grew legs because owners Allison Lubert and Heather Esposito were tired of fighting a war between allergies and good food.
“Both Heather and I have struggled with our eating habits and with troubling food allergies,” Allison says, “and we both found ourselves striving to prepare our favorite treats in ways that were both delicious and appropriate for our diets. It’s a challenge to omit animal products, soy, gluten and corn and still create flavorful, crave-able baked goods, but we love to rise to that challenge every day.”
At this point, a percent--admittedly a small percent--is over the moon and charging for South Street. The rest of you are considering finding something else to click on. Read on, dear foodie. Read on.
The menu will include all kinds of sweets, ranging from carrot cake, lemon-poppy muffins, double chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin pie. That's right. Pumpkin pie, without milk. Don't doubt me; I wouldn't lie to you. The baking pair is making it happen with coconut milk, and sweetening the deal with agave nectar and maple syrup.
Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
You'll be able to check it out for yourself when doors open at 1424 South St., or by calling 215-545-1899.
