Explosions in the Sky to open for Flaming Lips

Posted by McG

If you're planning on catching the Flaming Lips when they play Philadelphia on August 29 at Pier Festival at Penn's Landing, you're in for a treat.

Austin, TX's Explosions in the Sky have been named as the opening act.

If you're not familiar with EITS, think long jammy instrumentals that start off quiet and build to an ear-crackling crescendo.

In some ways, they are the poor man's Mogwai (the band that pretty much mastered the elementary instrumental post-rock sound).

EITS did the music for Friday Night Lights, which gave them critical acclaim and a seeming free pass.

Unless you're a hardcore indie rock fan, you'll probably be too busy getting a beer to catch EITS, which is probably OK.

But if you are a fan of the meandering, trippy, sonic walls of sound interspersed with soft musical passages, then get yourself to the show early.

Also on the bill are Stardeath and White Dwarfs, who recently collaborated with the Lips on a Record Store Day exclusive 7" covering Madonna's song "Borderline."

Tickets go on sale July 10 from the usual suspects.
