Truth: The spirit is not missed as there is a myriad of liquor as difficult to find on an ordinary menu as it is to pronounce correctly. The drink menu, as seen here on Phoodie, reflects the craft cocktails concept that the ownership and management, led by Michael Welsh and Chris Doggett, seek to provide and develop: Custom cocktails, designed by skilled bartenders and served in a refined, yet simplistic atmosphere. 2. There is wine and beer. Some solid choices too. But really, don't miss the point of the experience. Among the best drinks sampled: the Simó Cup, a gin, lemon and cucumber concoction more refreshing than any summer drink you have ever had, and the Queen's Park Swizzle, which blends lime juice and mint with rum and bitters to great effect. Expect some seasonal changes to the list as temperatures and moods adjust. 3. It's dark. There is no natural light. Though it is located below street level and nearly entirely encased in concrete, the Franklin sidesteps the basement vibe by creating a palpable ambiance with speak-easy chic cloaked in magnetic coolness and punctuated by pure black accents and burgundy leather. 4. It's not a restaurant. The food made available for the media preview was from DiBruno Bros., the Philly cheese, charcuterie and antipasti masters, whose ricotta-stuffed figs and lean prosciutto went dead, solid perfect with the drinks. Without plans for a food menu of its own, the Franklin is negotiating a deal with DiBruno's to make a marriage of the small plates and craft drinks a constant feature.5. Drinks happen at pace. Each drink's many ingredients and unique preparation requirements mean that those used to getting Captain and Coke jiggered, gunned and slung in less than 30 seconds will have to appreciate the crafting of a proper cocktail.
