Aside from the fact that there is no baseball or football (not the American kind) in Great Britain - and that they have a Children's Secretary named Ed Balls who is now installing closed-circuit TV in private homes to monitor kids' behavior - the truest sign of an impending apocalypse in the U.K. is that the English pub, the forefather of the modern drinking establishment, is at risk because of the bad global economy and laws that are drying out livers overseas.According to this NPR story, more than 50 a week are shutting their doors for good:"... the death blow has been dealt by rising government taxes on beer — up to 20 percent in the past two years. The traditional pint glass of beer now runs about $6, meaning few working-class Brits can afford that other British tradition: buying your friends a round.......Michael Turner, Fuller's chairman, is also the head of the British Beer and Pub Association. He says there's not just an economic cost but a social cost when a pub fails, especially in the countryside."There is no alternative to the pub," he says. "It is the center of the community. And all the social interaction that goes with a pub is likely to be lost when the pub goes. I mean, you can go from three pubs to two pubs in a community, but when you lose the last pub — that's it..."Wow. Forget Cash-for-Clunkers: How about Cash for Drunkards?

>>> If you did not heed our advice and buy tickets to the Newtown Brew Fest the day they went on sale, you are shit-outta-luck: it's sold out...BUT, there are two great beer festivals scheduled before then for which you can still get tickets.* The International Great Beer Expo is set for two separate sessions at the Philadelphia Naval Yards on Saturday, August 15. The emphasis is on import beers, natch. Food will also be available. Tickets are $45 online and $60 at the door.* The 10th annual Jenkintown Jazz and BrewFest, featuring free jazz and cold beer, is Sunday, September 13, at 1 p.m. BrewFest tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. Tickets will go on sale in August.>>> Kid Rock, who will play Hersheypark Stadium (with Lynyrd Skynyrd) on Friday, July 31, welcomed his new line of suds - American Badass Beer (not Bawitda Brew?) - earlier this month in Detroit. The American style lager is brewed by Michigan Brewing Co. Rock said of the beer in Rolling Stone:“...It's a good American light beer, a regular beer, and a light beer, an everyday beer...” He also mentioned he drinks Jim Beam and Coke.

...or at least part of it.According to a post made Friday on local blog Jack Curtin's Liquid Diet (found via Foobooz), the General Lafayette Inn in Lafayette Hill (Montgomery County) is in danger of closing if it doesn't soon receive an influx of cash for which it is offering partial ownership of the tavern and brewery. See their Web site by clicking here.A letter from brewmaster/proprietor Chris Leonard outlines the gravity of the situation:"...Unless we raise significant funds in the next two months - to get current with our debtors, improve facilities, increase wholesale beer production, and increase our marketing efforts – closure is imminent. While we have solicited sale of the General, no offers have come – understandable in this economic climate. Any offer we do receive will likely come from a party uninterested in the history of the General. It could become the next Wawa or CVS. Even more likely is that we will face foreclosure, allowing a developer to more easily acquire the properties and demolish the 5th oldest tavern in the country...."Leonard stated that interested parties can invest for as little as $5000 and that he is also initiating a “Friends of the General Lafayette Inn Society” in which its 150 members will receive an annual $275 house account for each of the next five years for their $1000 contribution.

6 things about the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co.

The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., whose name is a nod to the business front set-up by South Philly's own Max "Boo Boo" Hoff to traffic alcohol during Prohibition, opened in the space formerly occupied by Bar Noir just off Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia in late June. Find it, and other bars, here. The vital info on this new spot:1. There is no vodka. None. Truth: The spirit is not missed as there is a myriad of liquor as difficult to find on an ordinary menu as it is to pronounce correctly. The drink menu, as seen here on Phoodie, reflects the craft cocktails concept that the ownership and management, led by Michael Welsh and Chris Doggett, seek to provide and develop: Custom cocktails, designed by skilled bartenders and served in a refined, yet simplistic atmosphere. 2. There is wine and beer. Some solid choices too. But really, don't miss the point of the experience. Among the best drinks sampled: the Simó Cup, a gin, lemon and cucumber concoction more refreshing than any summer drink you have ever had, and the Queen's Park Swizzle, which blends lime juice and mint with rum and bitters to great effect. Expect some seasonal changes to the list as temperatures and moods adjust. 3. It's dark. There is no natural light. Though it is located below street level and nearly entirely encased in concrete, the Franklin sidesteps the basement vibe by creating a palpable ambiance with speak-easy chic cloaked in magnetic coolness and punctuated by pure black accents and burgundy leather. 4. It's not a restaurant. The food made available for the media preview was from DiBruno Bros., the Philly cheese, charcuterie and antipasti masters, whose ricotta-stuffed figs and lean prosciutto went dead, solid perfect with the drinks. Without plans for a food menu of its own, the Franklin is negotiating a deal with DiBruno's to make a marriage of the small plates and craft drinks a constant feature.5. Drinks happen at pace. Each drink's many ingredients and unique preparation requirements mean that those used to getting Captain and Coke jiggered, gunned and slung in less than 30 seconds will have to appreciate the crafting of a proper cocktail. Soak in the surroundings, dude.6. There is nothing else quite like this in Philadelphia. While it certainly references New York City lounge Death & Co., the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. has managed to create a stylish and sophisticated setting without the oft-accompanying stuffiness.
